Analysis on Blanche DuBois From “A Streetcar Named Desire”

In Tennesse Williams' play, â€Å"A Streetcar Named Desire† the readers are introduced to a character named Blanche DuBois. In the plot, Blanche is Stella's younger sister who has come to visit Stella and her husband Stanley in New Orleans. After their first meeting Stanley develops a strong dislike for Blanche and everything associated with her. Among the things Stanley dislikes about Blanche are her â€Å"spoiled-girl† manners and her indirect and quizzical way of conversing. Stanley also believes that Blanche has conned him and his wife out of the family mansion. In his opinion, she is a good-for-nothing â€Å"leech† that has attached itself to his household, and is just living off him. Blanche's lifelong habit of avoiding unpleasant realities leads to her breakdown as seen in her irrational response to death, her dependency, and her inability to defend herself from Stanley's attacks. Blanche†s situation with her husband is the key to her later behavior. She married rather early at the age of sixteen to whom a boy she believed was a perfect gentleman. He was sensitive, understanding, and civilized much like herself coming from an aristocratic background. She was truly in love with Allen whom she considered perfect in every way. Unfortunately for her he was a homosexual. As she caught him one evening in their house with an older man, she said nothing, permitting her disbelief to build up inside her. Sometime later that evening, while the two of them were dancing, she told him what she had seen and how he disgusted her. Immediately, he ran off the dance floor and shot himself, with the gunshot forever staying in Blanche†s mind. After that day, Blanche believed that she was really at fault for his suicide. She became promiscuous, seeking a substitute men (especially young boys), for her dead husband, thinking that she failed him sexually. Gradually her reputation as a whore built up and everyone in her home town knew about her. Even for military personnel at the near-by army base, Blanche's house became out-of-bounds. Promiscuity though wasn't the only problem she had. Many of the aged family members died and the funeral costs had to be covered by Blanche's modest salary. The deaths were long, disparaging and horrible on someone like Blanche. She was forced to mortgage the mansion, and soon the bank repossessed it. At school, where Blanche taught English, she was dismissed because of an incident she had with a seventeen-year-old student that reminded her of her late husband. Even the management of the hotel Blanche stayed in during her final days in Laurel, asked her to leave because of the all the different men that had been seeing there. All of this, cumulatively, weakened Blanche, turned her into an alcoholic, and lowered her mental stability bit-by-bit. Her husband's death affects her greatly and determines her behavior from then on. Having lost Allan, who meant so much to her, she is blinded by the light and from then on never lights anything stronger than a dim candle. This behavior is evident when she first comes to Stella's and puts a paper lantern over the light bulb. Towards the end, when the doctor comes for Blanche and she says she forgot something, Stanley hands her her paper lantern. Even Mitch notices that she cannot stand the pure light, and therefore refuses to go out with him during the daytime or to well lit places. Blanche herself says â€Å"I can't stand a naked light bulb any more than †¦ â€Å". A hate for bright light isn't the only affect on Blanche after Allan's death – she needs to fill her empty heart, and so she turns to a lifestyle of one-night-stands with strangers. She tries to comfort herself from not being able to satisfy Allan, and so Blanche makes an effort to satisfy strangers, thinking that they need her and that she can't fail them like she failed Allan. At the same time she turns to alcohol to avoid the brutality of death. The alcohol seems to ease her through the memories of the night of Allan's death. Overtime the memory comes back to her, the musical tune from the incident doesn't end in her mind until she has something alcoholic to drink. All of these irrational responses to death seem to signify how Blanche's mind is unstable, and yet she tries to still be the educated, well-mannered, and attractive person that Mitch first sees her as. She tries to not let the horridness come out on top of her image, wanting in an illusive and magical world instead. The life she desires though is not what she has and ends up with. Blanche is very dependent coming to Stella from Belle Reve with less than a dollar in change. Having been fired at school, she resorts to prostitution for finances, and even that does not suffice her. She has no choice but to come and live with her sister; Blanche is homeless, out of money, and cannot get a job due to her reputation in Laurel. Already in New Orleans, once she meets Stanley, Blanche is driven to get out of the house. She needs get away from Stanley for she feels that a Kowalski and a DuBois cannot coexist in the same household. Her only resort to get out, though, is Mitch. She then realizes how much she needs Mitch. When asked by Stella, Whether Blanche wants Mitch, Blanche answers â€Å"I want to rest†¦ breathe quietly again! Yes-I want Mitch†¦ if it happens†¦ I can leave here and not be anyone's problem†¦ â€Å". This demonstrates how dependent she is on Mitch, and consequently Blanche tries to get him to marry her. There is though Stanley who stands between her and Mitch. Stanley is a realist and cannot stand the elusive â€Å"dame Blanche†, eventually destroying her along with her illusions. Blanche cannot withstand his attacks. Before her, Stanley's household was exactly how he wanted it to be. When Blanche came around and drunk his liquor, bathed in his bathtub, and posed a threat to his marriage, he acted like a primitive animal that he was, going by the principle of â€Å"the survival of the fittest†. Blanche already weakened by her torturous past did not have much of a chance against him. From their first meeting when he realized she lied to him about drinking his liquor, he despised her. He attacked her fantasies about the rich boyfriend at a time when she was most emotionally unstable. He had fact over her word and forced her to convince herself that she did not part with Mitch in a friendly manner. Further, he went on asking her for the physical telegram to convince him that she did receive it. When Blanche was unable to provide it, he completely destroyed her fantasies, telling her how she was the worthless Queen of the Nile sitting, on her throne and swilling down his liquor. This wild rebuttal by Stanley she could not possibly take, just as she could not face a naked light bulb. Further when Stanley went on to rape her, he completely diminished her mental stability. It was not the actual rape that represents the causes for her following madness, but the fact that she was raped by a man who represented everything unacceptable to her. She couldn't handle being so closely exposed to something that she has averted and diluted all of her life – reality, realism, and rape by a man who knew her, destroyed her, and in the end made her something of his. She could not possibly effectively refute against him in front of Stella. Blanche's past and present actions & behavior, in the end, even in Stella's eyes depicted her as an insane person. All of Blanche's troubles with Stanley that in the end left her in a mental institution could have been avoided by her. Stanley and she would have gotten along better if she would have been frank with him during their first encounter. Blanche made a grave mistake by trying to act like a lady, or trying to be what she thought a lady ought to be. Stanley, being as primitive as he was, would have liked her better if she was honest with him about drinking his liquor. Blanche always felt she could give herself to strangers, and so she did try to flirt with Stanley at first. After all like she said to Stella â€Å"Honey, would I be here if the man weren't married? â€Å", Stanley did catch her eyes at first. But being brutally raped by him in the end destroyed her because he was not a starnger, he knew her, he made her face reality, and in a way he exposed her to the bright luminous light she could not stand all her life.

Technology In Private Healthcare Sector Health And Social Care Essay

There has been increasing usage of Health Information Technology ( HIT ) into governmental and private wellness attention sector. The authorities has already spent plenty on federally regulated wellness industries for implementing HIT, and achieved favourable results. The private health care organisations like place health care, group place, grownup Foster attention, private patterns, and rehabilitation centres are the targeted centres for implementing HIT to better the quality of attention, lessening wellness costs and diminish medical mistakes. The execution of HIT has many possible positive effects, but it besides has few negative effects that have to be resolve in close hereafter. The demand of implementing HIT is increasing twenty-four hours by twenty-four hours because of deceitful activities may endanger state ‘s wellness. This research survey concludes that execution of HIT has possible to better state ‘s wellness attention services. Section I: Definition OF THE PROBLEMBackgroundThe wellness attention system of United States began as a chiefly voluntary or generous system where patients paid small to no money for wellness attention services. Since its initial phases, this system has undergone some major alterations ( Thomas-Brogan, 2009 ) . Health attention has now evolved into a concern organic structure that requires considered planning, fiscal direction, equipped controls, and efficient fortes to keep its feasibleness in both governmental and private wellness sectors. Harmonizing to Thomas-Brogan ( 2009 ) , â€Å" the wellness attention industry is one of the largest industries in United States, using over 13 million workers with the jutting addition of over 3 million new occupations by the twelvemonth 2014 † . The mean life expectancy for U.S. citizen is 77.9 old ages of age, harmonizing to the National Center for Health Statistics. As the mean life anticipation bound additions, the aged citizens, whic h is the largest group of wellness attention consumers, will besides turn wellness attention industries ( Thomas-Brogan, 2009 ) . Due to current progresss in engineering and emerging jobs associated with efficiency and quality of wellness attention services, there are some chances to better quality life for underserved United States citizens through execution of information engineerings ( Moiduddin & A ; Moore, 2008 ) . The attending is being targeted towards the potency of Health Information Technology ( HIT ) in private health care industries to diminish wellness attention costs and to better quality, safety and efficiency of wellness attention services in United States of America ( kaiserEDU, 2008 ) . Harmonizing to Miller ( 2005 ) , in 1999 the Institute of Medicine ( IOM ) surprised the American population with its estimation that between 40,000 to 90,000 lives were lost due to medical mistakes. While the IOM established a balanced facet of the root causes, many wellness attention organisations seized a solution to better quality attention of the patient: Computerized Supplier Order Entry ( CPOE ) . The effectual drivers of investing in HIT contain the promise of quality and efficiency additions. Key privateness moralss for screening personal information have been in continuance for old ages and supply a charity for privateness Torahs, patterns, and policies ( Koontz & A ; Powner, 2007 ) . In 1996, the execution and ordinance of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act ( HIPAA ) define the conditions under which an person ‘s privy wellness information may be used or disclosed. In April 2004, under the supervising of President Bush an executive order has been issued for the development and execution of interoperable HIT in both the populace and private sectors to better the effectivity of wellness attention services in United States, and developing the office of the National Coordinator for HIT ( ONC ) ( Koontz & A ; Powner, 2007 ) . The barriers of execution of Information Technology ( IT ) include the beginning cost and complex construction of IT execution, which often requires important procedures and cultural alterations ( Medpac, 2004 ) . Certain features of wellness attention like payment policies and fragmented bringing system can besides present barrier for IT acceptance. Over cumbrous informations and deficiency of convenience of doctor besides considered as barriers for implementing IT system in wellness attention. Security and privateness issues for patient information besides can play function as barriers in wellness information engineering.Statement of the jobThere is grounds to propose that Health Information Technology has potential to better the quality of attention in state ‘s wellness attention services.Purpose of the surveyThe intent of this survey is to heighten readers ‘ consciousness about benefits available sing Health Information Technology in private wellness attention sector which could better state ‘s wellness and wealth.Research QuestionsThe undermentioned research inquiries created the solid foundation for this research. The inquiry stated will assist to place how to utilize the information engineering in wellness attention system, what are the chief concentrated countries for the execution of HIT, and the negative and positive effects of HIT. Does wellness information engineering have capableness to better the quality attention, cut down medical mistakes and wellness attention costs? What are the positive and negative effects of implementing wellness information engineering in private wellness attention sector?Definition of footingsElectronic Health Record ( EHR ) : â€Å" The Electronic Health record ( EHR ) is a longitudinal electronic record of patient wellness information generated by one or more brushs in any attention bringing scene † ( himms.org, 2010 ) . These electronic wellness records include patients ‘ demographics, advancement sheets, diagnosing and medicine lists, research lab consequences and radiology studies. These wellness records streamline the doctor ‘s work procedure. Underserved U.S. citizens: Underserved U.S. citizens mean those citizens populating in U.S. still non having proper wellness attention services. The major features of this type of population are hapless ; uninsured ; have limited English linguistic communication proficiency ; lack acquaintance or complexness with wellness attention system ; and those who live in rural countries ( Koontz & A ; Powner, 2007 ) . E-Prescription: E-Prescription is â€Å" a prescriber ‘s ability to electronically direct an accurate, error-free and apprehensible prescription straight to a pharmaceutics from the point-of-care † ( CMS, 2010 ) . In 2003, the constitution of electronic prescribing in the Medicare Modernization Act ( MMA ) was the first measure, and in July 2006 the Institute of Medicine developed the function of e-prescribing in diminishing medical mistakes, and helped to heighten the apprehension of e-prescribing in patient safety. Computerized Physician Order Entry ( CPOE ) : CPOE is defined as a computing machine system that permits direct credence of medical orders by the professional who has licence and civil autonomies to make so. The benefit of direct come ining orders in COPE system is reduced mistakes by disregarding the uncertainness of hand-written medical orders ( CPOE, 2009 ) . Clinical Decision Support ( CDS ) : Cadmium is a information system premeditated to better clinical determination doing sing patients ‘ diagnostic and curative advancement of attention ( Koontz & A ; Powner, 2007 ) . Centers for Medicare & A ; Medicaid ( CMS ) : CMS is a federal bureau of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, antecedently known as Health Care Financing Administration ( HCFA ) which governs Medicare Programs, Medicaid Programs, State Children ‘s Programs ( SCHIP ) , and other wellness portability plans. The Medicare and Medicaid were established through Social Security Act on July 30, 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson ( CMS, 2010 ) .RestrictionsDue to the six hebdomads clip restraint, it would be deficient to carry on more primary and secondary research on current proviso of wellness information engineering in wellness attention installations. Therefore, the figure of research will be limited due to the short clip period. Section II: Reappraisal OF LITERATUREIntroductionInformation Technology includes informations direction, networking, technology computing machine hardware, package design, database design and direction and disposal of systems. Information Technology uses electronic computing machine package which allows converting, hive awaying, protecting, processing, conveying and recovering the information in a unafraid manner. Information Technology allows sharing calculating power and split work load between different systems ( Hill, 2010 ) . Health Information Technology ( HIT ) is the wide model to depict the comprehensive direction of wellness information with the secure transmittal between wellness information consumer and wellness attention supplier. The wellness information engineering can be identified as the most promising tool to better the overall quality, safety every bit good as efficiency of the wellness bringing and receiving system ( NACCHO, 2010 ) . The wellness attention system of United States of America consists of governmental wellness organisations and private wellness organisations. Implementation of Health Information Technology has been playing function since 1990s, but Congress could non accomplish success in implementing HIT in private sectors of wellness industries such as, place wellness attention, nursing places, grownup Foster attention, group places, place doctor services, pressing attention, rehabilitation plans, skilled nursing installations, etc. The wellness attention services in these countries count about 40 % of entire wellness attention outgo by wellness insurance companies. Even though available benefits by federal, many wellness organisations are non ready to utilize advanced wellness information engineering to better quality services. The health care section of United States of America is puting over $ 1.7 trillion yearly in wellness attention services ; still the citizens are inundated with pathetic quality and inefficient services ( RAND Health, 2005 ) . The Institute of Medicine ( IOM ) , the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics ( NCVHS ) , and other proficient panels have recognized information engineering as one of the most dominating cogwheels for cut downing medical mistakes, diminishing wellness attention costs, and educating the quality of wellness attention services. The end for these systems is to work impeccably as an component of a National Health Information Infrastructure ( NHII ) , which could ease wellness attention suppliers anyplace in the state to entree patient information at the point of attention ( Redhead, 2005 ) . In early 1987, a particular study was published on infirmary information system at the Veterans Administration sing its efficiency. That early attempt was the gradual oncoming of wellness information sciences, but absence of advanced engineerings ceased down the early success. But strong attempts by the authoritiess and fiscal bond outs helped Health Information Technology to deep their roots into the land. The lone drawback of implementing wellness information engineering in little wellness industries and organisations is an expensive initial apparatus of engineering ( RAND Health, 2005 ) . Most of the wellness attention suppliers need advanced information technological system to organize a patient ‘s attention with other wellness attention suppliers. This system transfers required wellness records, size up conformity with bar and disease direction rules, and buttocks and percolate up public presentations ( RAND Health, 2005 ) . Each province in United States has its ain health care squad to implement Health Information Technology into their wellness attention system. Michigan is the great illustration which has good developed health care squad called the Michigan Health Information Network ( MiHIN ) ( MiHIN, 2010 ) . The MiHIN is initiated by State of Michigan to concentrate in betterment of quality wellness attention services, efficiency, and safety of the patients. The MiHIN is a joint venture by the Michigan Department of Community Health ( MDCH ) and the Michigan Department of Information Technology ( MDIT ) . The MiHIN is seting indispensable attempt in wellness attention suppliers to utilize electronic wellness records in a important manner that permits patient ‘s medical records to be available as it needed ( MiHIN, 2010 ) .Why Healthcare System of United States Needs HITThe wellness attention system of United States becomes more and more expensive, and the entire outgo by the wellness attentio n section is about $ 1.9 trillion or $ 6,500 per capita each twelvemonth. The relationship between the growing of wellness attention disbursement and current economic system is per se compound and multidimensional. The addition in wellness attention outgo can be considered as a weight on immense economic growing and as a driving force of local prosperity. At a local degree, the growing in wellness attention disbursement is viewed as good portion, because its creates more occupations in wellness attention sector, increases wage criterions, expands local grosss, and increases usage of wellness related goods and services ( U.S. Department of Health & A ; Human Services, 2004 ) . The tabular array 1 shows passing on wellness attention services in comparing with other disbursals such as energy, labour, pension, judicial proceeding and adoption in twelvemonth 2004. Table 1. Greatest Cost Pressure on U.S. Businesss Beginning: The U.S. Department of Health & A ; Human Services ( 2004 ) . The effects of Healthcare disbursement on U.S. economic system. Retrieved March 17, 2010, from hypertext transfer protocol: //aspe.hhs.gov/health/costgrowth/ The tabular array 1 sum-ups entire per centum cost of wellness attention services by authorities in comparing with other disbursals. In the twelvemonth 2004, the entire wellness attention outgo counted for 43 % from the whole governmental outgo. The sky-rocketing cost of wellness attention services and increased fraudulent activities by wellness attention suppliers played a large function in weaving off authorities histories. The chief ground in holding HIT effectual into the health care system is to diminish the fraud activities and therefore lessenings healthcare disbursals. In the current health care market many wellness attention frauds were caught by FBI and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. The biggest medical fraud was settled in June, 2003 paying $ 1.7 billion by HCA Inc – the health care company in amendss originating false claims to Medicare and other wellness insurance plans by federal. The proprietor of the company Bill Frist was involved in civil liability for fraud claims due to assortment of illegal activities, fraud charge and payment to doctors by hard currency kickbacks ( Bozita, 2009 ) .Tools of HIT in Private Health Care SectorThere are different types of tools for implementing HIT into the wellness attention system for private patterns, such as Electronic Health Records, E-prescription, Computerized Decision Support ( CDS ) , and the Computerized Physician Order Entry ( CPOE ) . The usage of these HIT tools varies by their maps, and besides depends on the medical installation utilizing them consequently. The usage and benefits of these tools concrete in improved quality attention, diminish medical mistakes, and cut down wellness attention costs. And the description of part replies absolutely to oppugn one of the research. The description of the widely recognized tools is following: Electronic Health Records The Electronic Health Record ( EHR ) can be defined as the electronically available wellness records of a patient, created for speedy and easy entree for both, physicians and patient, at any clip with unafraid cyberspace sites, and created by one or more than one wellness attention suppliers. This record covers the patient history, get downing from present reference, immunization/vaccination, any wellness conditions, any medicines or prescription, advancement notes, medical trials conducted and its consequences ( HIMSS, 2010 ) . An first-class illustration for implementing EHR into the system is Palo Alto Medical Foundation ( PAMF ) which has all its patients ‘ information electronically saved into their database. The handiness of electronic wellness record at unafraid internet site of PAMF by their patients let them to see of import constituents of their medical records, reexamine the medical trial consequences and discourse it with doctors, petition electronic prescription an d renew or do assignments ( PAMF, 2010 ) . EHR besides allows doctor and office member of private patterns to remain off from documents and at finger tip they can hold the patient history in forepart of them as needed. Health attention suppliers are besides able to reexamine patient ‘s insurance information along with the charge information. Physicians are now able to mention the patient to specialist or surgeon if they want to supply expertness intervention. Before ordering any drugs, they can reexamine the patient history or information if any drug interactions are at that place ( PAMF, 2010 ) . The study conducted in November 2007 shows 63 % of 2153 U.S. grownups had agreed that the sharing of the electronic wellness record allow patients to have better wellness attention as a ground of now physicians and research workers are available to portion the information and same clip are able to extinguish the medical mistakes ( Bright, 2007 ) . E-Prescription E-prescription has been explained as the key to better patient safety and to cut down expensive medicine costs. E-prescription is an electronic way to compose prescription by come ining informations through e-prescription package and reassign informations to take parting pharmaceuticss. It is estimated that due to medical prescription mistakes around 7000 deceases occur every twelvemonth in United States of America. These mistakes are fundamentally due to hand-writing illegibility, false dose information, and missed medicine-medicine or medicine-allergy reactions. Around 3 billion paper based prescription written yearly, which counts the biggest paper-based concerns in United States of America ( Pennell, 2009 ) . The construction and map of the e-prescription package are setup with full of benefits and extraordinary characteristics. The warning and watchful system of the package provide guidelines on holding the incorrect information on the prescribed drugs. The package is equipped with medicine direction procedure with the aid of Drug Utilization Review ( DUR ) plans. The DUR plans check patient ‘s current medicine program for drug-drug interactions, drug-allergy interactions, multiple diagnosings, right dose of prescribed drugs, inauspicious effects, etc. Many of the new soft-wares can besides entree patients ‘ program of wellness with the diagnosings and intervention at a clip of ordering drugs as an qui vive if there is any drug wrongness ( Pennell, 2009 ) . The private patterns and place wellness bureaus receive 1000000s of phone calls from pharmaceuticss sing the prescribed medical specialties, doses, and refill petitions. An E-prescription helps to cut down the phone calls and call-backs for pharmaceuticss and physician ‘s offices. The study conducted in 2003 by Medco Health Solutions has ruled out that doctors and the staff of doctors ‘ offices in Boston spend one tierce of their office clip in replying pharmaceutics phone calls, facsimiling prescriptions, draw out charts, replenishing charts, call-backs which reduces office work flow and productiveness ( Pennell, 2009 ) . Harmonizing to Pennell ( 2009 ) , it is estimated that 20 % of the hand-written prescription orders go lost and ne'er filled by the patient at pharmaceuticss. But the e-prescription systems increase patient conformity by progressing the filling of prescription and provides drug literature printed to the patient. It besides helps patients to better formulary attachment by look intoing generic substances at point of attention. It increases patient convenience by cut downing their visits to pharmaceuticss and diminishing their waiting periods ( Pennell, 2009 ) . Recent study by Pamela Dolan ( 2010 ) describes a important rise in the figure of wellness attention suppliers who prescribe medicine electronically. In private wellness attention sector, there is merely one doctor out of four seeking to utilize e-prescription. The Surecripts, state ‘s largest e-prescribing web, released advancement study which shows important advancement in utilizing e-prescription. Table 2 shows the drastic rush of Numberss of wellness attention suppliers utilizing engineering from 2007 to 2009. Table 2: E-prescription Growth Industry Beginning: Dolan, P. L. ( 2010, March 15 ) . E-prescribing growth, but most patterns still do non usage it. Retrieved March 16, 2010, from hypertext transfer protocol: //www.amaassn.org/amednews/2010/03/15/bisb0315.htm In sum-up of Table 2, it is cleared that the consciousness of benefits by utilizing wellness information engineering is widely spread out amongst the doctors and the infirmaries. The addition in Numberss itself says that the demand for wellness information technological tools is increasing twenty-four hours by twenty-four hours. The estimated growing of utilizing HIT tools will be more than 200 % from 2009 to 2010 ( Dolan, 2010 ) .Professionals of Implementing HIT in Private Healthcare SectorThe usage of computing machines and electronic devices enables doctors and other wellness attention suppliers to administer and entree medical records ( Bihari, 2010 ) . Health Information Technology helps to acquire the higher quality attention and is readily accessible by physicians at any location. As all the information is electronically available, physicians can rapidly entree to patient history any clip. This electronic information eliminate paperwork and the same clip cut down the storage infinite and cut down staff clip to keep medical records. As a consequence it helps wellness attention concerns to cut down costs and clip ( Wangia, 2009 ) . An electronic wellness record provides information about any immunization/vaccination that has been taken in past and any medical trials that have been conducted in past with its trial consequences. Therefore, it is easy for physicians to happen whether the immunization/vaccination or medical trial was already done or non and money salvaging for the patients, as they do n't necessitate to reiterate the immunization/vaccination or medical trial ( Bihari, 2010 ) . The Health Information Technology provides evidence-based reviews to the doctor about any type of radiological trial order to patients, and happening out whether the patient had that earlier or non with its consequences ( CBO, 2008 ) . This finally helps to command the costs. The electronic wellness records of infirmaries, which include the Clinical Decision System ( CDS ) every bit good as the Computerized Physician Order Entry ( CPOE ) to cut down the cost of prescription drugs. The electronic wellness records allow doctors to look into the list of medicines patient return, list of possible drug allergic reactions ( if any ) and any drug interactions or reaction of medicine. Therefore, physician before ordering any drug or medical specialty can travel through the electronic wellness record of patient to avoid or to minimise the hazard of any drug interactions or reactions ( CBO, 2008 ) . Besides these, the Health Information Technology ( HIT ) with the electronic wellness records allows patients to hold active entree of wellness attention records of medical history and intervention. This besides allows to see the refill a prescription and to reexamine any conducted medical trial consequences. Thus an electronic wellness record allows patients to discourse wellness job with the physician on phone without seeing really ( Bihari, 2010 ) . Harmonizing to 2005 drumhead study of infirmaries, because of wellness information engineering, the nurses have less paperwork and they use the saved clip productiveness work such as assisting patient to acquire appropriate preventative attention, supplying better instruction about their heath, etc ( CBO, 2008 ) . However the electronic wellness records of Health Information Technology are available on a really unafraid web that means it has strong privateness available. This allows a patient to inquire concerns to the physician by electronic mails without any vacillation. The electronic mails are merely accessible by physicians, which reduces the transmittal mistake of accurate information electronically every bit good as cut downing the opportunities of error that may happen while one misread physician ‘s script. The electronic wellness records of Health Information Technology cut down the duplicate hazard of any wellness attention supplier ‘s diagnostic process ( Wangi a, 2009 ) .Improvements in Governmental HIT SectorThe President Clinton and President Bush had besides applied compulsory usage of HIT in 1999, 2003, 2008 and now President Obama made it confirmed that by 2012 each and every medical installation must utilize wellness information engineering into their system. The Congress had declared bundles many times to deep the root of HIT into the system to do it truly effectual in bettering quality attention throughout the state, but merely the half success is achieved. An electronic wellness record is a systematic record of electronic wellness information of a patient and allows an person to hold large scope of informations in comprehensive or drumhead signifier such as medical history, medical conditions, allergic reactions or reactions of any medical specialties, immunization/vaccination taken, medical trial consequences every bit good as charge information. Therefore, late the quality of wellness record in the Veterans Hospital has improved a batch. Millions of pending or inactive documents are now active and are resolved. These were possible merely because of the electronic wellness record of wellness information engineering ( Goldstein, 2009 ) . An employee of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, was working in the charge section and was involved in the offense of stealing of patients ‘ record and earned tonss of money by victimizing the insurance companies or by bear downing patients for the intervention that they ne'er received it. But due to the handiness of electronics records both by patient and the physicians, this type of offense or fraud are now evitable easy and rapidly ( Goldstein, 2009 ) .Cons of Implementing HIT in Private Healthcare SectorEven though the wellness information engineering have rationalized the concern procedure, it has besides decreases occupation, downsizing every bit good as outsourcing of employees, these all leads to unemployment overall. For illustration, due to the wellness information engineering, there is less paper work for office employees which means with lesser figure of people the same sum of work can be done. And people start losing their occupations as there is no exces sively much paper work to make. Besides the quicker, easy and convenient communicating by the wellness information engineering, there are opportunities of interceptions to e-mail hacking. And besides people do non desire that their personal information is going public accessible. For illustration, to salvage their ain clip people send an electronic mail to their physician about their concern inquiry for their wellness and the electronic mail hacker can read their personal information in electronic mail and do it available for general populace. Therefore, sometimes people get more disquieted with electronically available information. However, as per the research survey conducted by Richard Hillestad and associate members at RAND, the Las Vegas Sun reports the execution of an Electronic Health Record ( EHR ) system would take about 15 old ages countrywide and initial puting cost of an Electronic Health Record ( EHR ) system in hospital apparatus is about $ 98 billion and in doctors is about $ 17 billion. This means that the mean annual cost in hospital apparatus is $ 6.5 billion whereas the mean annual cost in doctors ‘ apparatus is $ 1.1 billion ( MediLexicon, 2005 ) . It is in general being said by the industry experts that today ‘s biggest issue of occupation security is due to the cyberspace engineering. In the universe of invariably altering engineering, people have to do their egos cognizant and update about it, otherwise it would be hard to work for them and finally they lose their occupations. For illustration, the aged staff members at physicians ‘ office have to larn this electronic heath record maintaining system or they might lose their occupations because of non able to execute accurately. This besides relates to elder patients, who do non hold any thought about the computing machine systems and can non entree their personal information at a peculiar clip. As technological progresss take topographic point twenty-four hours by twenty-four hours, there is besides a menace of cyberspace viruses any minute on computing machine systems. Peoples learnt a lesson in earlier yearss, when Y2K virus infested many computing machine systems, and wipe out all informations from difficult thrust. If this could go on to damage patients ‘ informations in infirmaries, so there is no usage to hold wellness information engineering to continue medical records updated ( Koffey, 1999 ) . Some advocates sustain that put ining Health Information Technology ( HIT ) system in doctor ‘s office or private infirmary apparatus is harder and complex than put ining merely a Health Information Technology ( HIT ) system or package in a computing machine and connecting to the Internet Explorer ( NCPA, 2010 ) . The Health Information Technology ( HIT ) is fundamentally manus held device, intending the electronic wellness record is maintained and updated by worlds into the computing machine. Therefore, there might be possible opportunities of holding an mistake during the information direction. There might be possibility of an mistake during come ining the study or consequence of any medical trial consequence, which at later may do bigger or unsafe jobs. For illustration the medical trial consequence of X individual says the blood sugar degree is 120 and by misidentify the individual who come ining the information in the system typed 210, which means individual X is diagnosed with higher sugar degree and considered as diabetic patient.President Obama ‘s HIT Contribution in Healthcare Reform Plan of 2010The current economical drawback and increased fraud, maltreatment and waste in wellness attention disables consumers from acquiring economical medical benefits and leads to worsen in qua lity of wellness attention ( Hasan, 2010 ) . One of the biggest challenges for United States of America is to finalise scheme and thoughts which help consumers holding medical benefits with quality and economical coverage in private wellness attention sector. The recent scheme of President Obama is to welcome and appreciate any thought which can diminish the wellness attention outgo, bring quality attention, cut down fraud and maltreatment, and gives consumer pick of health care. The Major Constraints The major restraints in President Obama ‘s Health Care Reform Plan are ( Hasan, 2010 ) : Low-cost, Portable, and Quality Health Coverage for All Standardizing and Overhauling the U.S. Health Care System to Lower Costs & A ; Improve Quality Promoting Prevention and Strengthening Public wellness Description & A ; Coverage The President Obama ‘s vision to the health care system is so concrete that non even a individual U.S. citizen suffers from unequal health care. President Obama ‘s estimated cost for health care reform program is about $ 50 to $ 65 billion. The existent measure provides $ 5 million to Centers for Medicare & A ; Medicaid ( CMS ) in 2010 and $ 10 million every twelvemonth from 2011 to 2019 ( Brewin, 2010 ) . The health care reform program caters investing in HIT aimed at dropping extreme disbursals that occur from decreased medical mistakes and weave off uneffective paper-based charge system. The health care program ‘s chief docket is to give cosmopolitan wellness insurance which will decrease unsalaried health care services ( Hasan, 2010 ) . Benefits to HIT of Private Healthcare Sector The wellness reform measure calls to innovative centre construct up for inveterate sick patients. With the aid of wellness Information Technology, patients ‘ coordination of attention would be managed by a web of suppliers connected to a chronic disease register and tele-home wellness services. For an illustration, about 20 million U.S. citizens suffer from Diabetes, and for them tele-home wellness engineering provides patients to relay blood sugar degrees to their primary attention suppliers through remote glucose metres. The statute law provides $ 5 million every twelvemonth from 2011 to 2015 to develop the autonomy at Home Medical Practice Demonstration Program, which could incorporate homecare visits by doctors, distant patient monitoring and nomadic diagnostic machines. One of the centre parts of the program is that each household will salvage around $ 2,500 every twelvemonth ( Brewin, 2010 ) . Critics The chief critic is sing to make another plan for the citizens under age of 65 or merely like Medicare is itself an expensive thought, which would do cost switching instead than cost decrease. President Obama besides wants to give more power to governmental plans like Medicaid and State Children ‘s Health Insurance Program ( SCHIP ) . Another point of treatment is about doing an investing in HIT and sing HIT is an of import component of cost control scheme of the program. Obama finds the lone manner to decide these issues is important usage of wellness information engineering ( Hasan, 2010 ) .DrumheadThe private wellness attention sector of United States of America is at hazard due to increasing demand, intensifying costs, inconsistent wellness attention services, and inactive coordinated wellness attention systems. The groundss show that wellness information engineering can better the efficiency, cost effectivity, quality, and safety of wellness attention release by doing prop er rules available to doctors throughout the wellness attention web. The wellness information engineering consists of different types of tools such as Electronic Health Records ( HER ) or Electronic Medical Records ( EMR ) , E-prescription, Computerized Physician Order Entry ( CPOE ) , Clinical Decision Support ( CDS ) which have their ain functions to play consequently to better the wellness attention system in general. Though there are more positive effects of implementing HIT in private wellness attention sector, but some negative effects are besides present to blockade the complete success. Section III: MethodologyData Collection MethodThis research will use primary research methods to back up secondary research database with the aid of on-line databases. The secondary research methods include scholarly diaries, magazines, articles, intelligence paper, and texts will be used to back up the results of primary research database. The major portion of this research will be drawn from appropriate old surveies and well-performed researches that evaluated several facets of implementing wellness information engineering in governmental health care sector and private health care sector. The information aggregation method will be performed to find the possible success of implementing wellness information engineering in private health care sector. The on-line resources and studies conducted by different writers will be considered to measure the usage of wellness information engineering into their system. The demand of technological progresss into the wellness attention system of private patterns will be gathered on a proper manner to happen out the hereafter obstructions. Besides the informations aggregation method will assist to happen the grounds for hold in implementing HIT into their system. This research will besides assist to happen the ways to set e-prescription system effectual to work in private wellness attention sector to diminish hand-written prescription mistakes. The usage of electronic medical records besides can be evaluated easy in private wellness attention sector though research work. Section IV: Analysis OF DATA Evidence suggests the chances for implementing HIT is bit by bit lifting in United States health care system from governmental health care sector to private health care sector. The little private patterns and place health care bureaus have besides started seting more attempt in utilizing HIT tools to better the quality attention countrywide. The research inquiries have given solid foundation to this research undertaking and happening the nutshell was the nucleus intent of this research undertaking. These research inquiries were analyzed below: Table: 3 Does wellness information engineering have capableness to better the quality attention, cut down medical mistakes and wellness attention costs? Writers Statements Agree/Disagree Bihari, 2010. Computers and other electronic devices enable doctors to administer and entree the medical records at any clip. Agree Wangia, 2009 Due to wellness information engineering, doctors can cut down the clip in taking audiences which can salvage the clip and costs. Agree Bright, 2007 The sharing of the electronic wellness record allow patients to have better wellness attention as a ground of now physicians and research workers are available to portion the information and same clip are able to extinguish the medical mistakes. Agree Redhead, 2005 The commission on National Health Information Infrastructure facilitates easy exchange of wellness information amongst wellness attention suppliers. Agree RAND Health, 2005 Even though implementing HIT improves the quality of attention but initial set up is small expensive. Disagree KaiserEDU, 2008 The possible usage of Health Information Technology provides quality betterment, cost decrease and diminish medical mistakes into health care system Agree Moiduddin & A ; Moore, 2008 There are some chances to better quality life for underserved United States citizens through execution of information engineerings Agree This research survey has contained positive and negative effects of implementing Health Information Technology which answers inquiry two. Though private patterns are different from the big governmental health care sectors, but the positive and negative effects will be the same every bit far as they both related to quality attention and health care disbursals. The table 4 suggests analysis study for inquiry 2 of the survey: What are the positive and negative effects of implementing wellness information engineering in private wellness attention sector? Writers Statements Effectss ( Positive/Negative ) Bihari, 2010 Health Information Technology helps to acquire the higher quality attention and is readily accessible by physicians at any location. Positive Wangia, 2009 This electronic information eliminate paperwork and the same clip cut down the storage infinite and cut down staff clip to keep medical records Positive CBO, 2010 With the aid of HIT tools healthcare suppliers can entree any radiological trials any clip which provides evidence-based reviews Positive Dolan, 2010 The estimated growing of utilizing HIT tools will be more than 200 % from 2009 to 2010. Positive Koffey, 1999 Because of threatens from computing machine viruses, there is no usage to hold wellness information engineering to continue medical records updated. Negative MediLexicon, 2005 The execution of the EHR system would take about 15 old ages countrywide and initial puting cost of the EHR system in hospital apparatus is about $ 98 billion and in doctors is about $ 17 billion. Negative NCPA, 2010 Installing Health Information Technology ( HIT ) system in doctor ‘s office or private infirmary apparatus is harder and complex Negative The information analysis tabular array 4 summaries the positive and negative effects of implementing HIT into the private health care sector. The 80 per centum of the resources suggest implementing HIT into the little organisation besides has the positive effects, but 20 per centum of the resources suggest implementing HIT has negative effects in certain affairs. Section V: SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONSDrumheadThe wellness attention system of United States of America is confronting economic drawback in present clip, and truly needs reform in wellness attention engineering to better quality of attention and decreases cost and medical mistakes. The President Obama ‘s wellness reform measure boosted up the execution of wellness information engineering in both governmental and private wellness attention sector. The current governmental scheme seting more attempt in usage of advanced engineering into health care system to accomplish success by cut downing sky-rocketing wellness attention expenditures. The old bailout bundle counts around $ 19 billion helped a batch in implementing wellness information engineering in governmental entities. The different signifiers of HIT are Electronic Medical Records ( EMR ) , E-prescription, Computerized Physician Order Entry ( CPOE ) , Clinical Decision Support ( CDS ) , etc. are really utile tools and are really easy available to put up into the system these yearss. The initial set up is small expensive, but President Obama ‘s bundle offers fiscal aid for utilizing wellness information sciences. For an illustration, if any private physicians ‘ office wants to utilize EMR or E-prescription package, the package company will be paying to the company excess money at certain continuance on annual footing. Despite of first-class benefits such as capablenesss to cut down medical mistakes, utmost cost benefits, reduces paper-based system and thinks environmentally green, better quality of wellness attention services ; though execution of HIT has some negative effects and more researches are traveling on to diminish the cost for initial set up and do safer transit of computerized medical informations. With the aid of telephonic interviews and secondary resources, the research can do solid decision on possible benefits of implementing HIT in private wellness attention sector.DecisionIn decision, the execution of wellness information engineering has been turning from governmental wellness attention sector to private wellness attention sector. The potency of HIT has been achieved by implementing it into the wellness attention system with proper planning and proper vision. In governmental wellness attention sector, execution of HIT has reached to the success by diminishing medical mistakes, c ut downing costs, and bettering quality of attention. The execution of HIT in private wellness attention sector besides has the same capablenesss to accomplish the success in affair of quality services and diminishing medical frauds. However, there is no cogent evidence that all private patterns and place attention bureaus can take active portion in implementing wellness information engineering.RecommendationsBased on the findings of this research survey, there are some recommendations which should be implemented in private wellness attention sector for better result. In information analysis, most private patterns and place wellness attention bureaus agreed to utilize HIT tools to diminish the medical mistakes and better quality intervention. The President Obama ‘s program besides has possible to set adequate attempt, but there is no surety in following regulations and ordinances by private wellness organisations. The major recommendation is to set compulsory statute law for implementing wellness information engineering into their system to acquire choice consequences. There must be formation of a jurisprudence or the authorities has to go through a sentence for conformity to utilize HIT tools, and breaching of an Act cause important mulct or penalty. This will take definite consequences in bettering quality of attention by utilizing wellness engineering in proper manner. Other recommendations include mandatory application of wellness information engineering package for e-prescription. At least an applicable tool for e-prescription saves possible hand-written prescription mistakes and deceases occurred from these types of mistakes can be lower down finally. The same manner, EMR besides can be implemented for safety transportation and to keep the confidentiality of patients ‘ medical records. The authorities will besides do a database which can salvage all medical records of the patients countrywide. So, that manner if something happen to any private wellness organisation so at least authorities has entree to all informations and safety sedimentation of medical records can be achieved easy. The authorities besides has to do a HIT tool for electronic charge for private patterns, so they can diminish paper-based procedures and think green environmentally. This will besides take to diminish deceitful activities by the wellness attention suppliers at private patterns and place wellness bureaus.

The Special Economic Zone Act of 1995: How Special Is It?

Cabatos 1 Lawdemhar T. Cabatos Ms. Louyzza Maria Victoria H. Vasquez English 10 21 March 2013 The Special Economic Zone Act of 1995: How Special Is It? Approved on February 24, 1995, the Special Economic Zone Act of 1995, the â€Å"act providing for the legal framework and mechanisms for the creation, operation, administration, and coordination of special economic zones in the Philippines, creating for this purpose, the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), and for other purposes,† took effect on the very day President Fidel Valdez Ramos imprinted his signature on the bill (â€Å"Republic Act No. 7916).It is the government? s declared policy to materialize state policies and provisions of the 1987 Philippine Constitution. Section 20, Article II of the 1987 Constitution states, â€Å"The State recognizes the indispensable role of the private sector, encourages private enterprise, and provides incentives to needed investments† and Section 12 of Article XII declares that â€Å"The State shall promote the preferential use of Filipino labor, domestic materials and locally produced goods, and adopt measures that help make them competitive,† (â€Å"The 1987 Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines†). By virtue of Republic Act No. 916, the Philippine government hopes to fulfill the mandates of its constitution. Before we deal on how special Republic Act No. 7916 really is, what are special economic zones (SEZs)? Defined in Republic Act No. 7916, Special Economic Zones (SEZs) or ECOZONES are â€Å"selected areas with highly developed or which have the potential to be Cabatos 2 developed into agro-industrial, industrial, tourist/recreational, commercial, banking, investment and financial centers. An ECOZONE may contain any or all of the following: industrial estates (IEs), export processing zones (EPZs), free trade zones, and tourist/recreational centers. The law defines an industrial estate (IE) as â€Å"a tract of land subdivi ded and developed according to a comprehensive plan under a unified continuous management and with provisions for basic infrastructure and utilities, with or without pre-built standard factory buildings and community facilities for the use of the community of industries. † An export processing zone (EPZ) is â€Å"a specialized industrial estate located physically and/or administratively outside customs territory, predominantly oriented to export production. A free trade zone is â€Å"an isolated policed area adjacent to a port of entry (as a seaport) and/or airport where imported goods may be unloaded for immediate transshipment or stored, repacked, sorted, mixed, or otherwise manipulated without being subject to import duties† (â€Å"Republic Act No. 7916†). For years, industrialization has been centered in key cities – the National Capital Region for Luzon, Cebu for Visayas and Davao and Cagayan de Oro for Mindanao – leaving other regions trailin g behind the Philippine industrialization scheme. Thus, special economic zones, as stated in the objectives of the law, are created to promote rural industrialization by transforming selected areas in the country into highly developed industrial, commercial and financial centers thereby promoting flow of both foreign and local investors and generating employment opportunities for the area? s labor force and ultimately supporting the government? s effort to reduce unemployment (â€Å"Republic Act No. 7916†). Economic zones are also thought to promote balanced growth by providing jobs especially to rural areas.Employment generation by special economic zones, in theory, bridges the poverty gap among social classes and balances the regional income inequality among regions (Clarete and Veron). Cabatos 3 To promote the flow of local and foreign investors into special economic zones, the law provides special incentives to enterprises located in special economic zones, including exemp tions from taxes under the National Internal Revenue Code. The law states that no taxes, local or national, shall be imposed on business enterprises operating within the ECOZONES.Instead, five percent (5%) of the gross income within the ECOZONE shall be remitted to the national government. Incentives are also given to enterprises located in export processing zones (EPZs) and free trade zones. Special permits for the importation of capital equipment and raw materials that are not subject to duties, taxes and other import restrictions are given to these businesses (â€Å"Republic Act No. 7916†). Through giving prospective investors tax incentives, the government aims to reel in foreign investors and urge local investors to establish businesses in special economic zones.Prior to the establishment of special economic zones in the Philippines, other Asian countries have already created special economic zones with the goal of attracting foreign direct investment, easing extensive u nemployment, supporting a wider economic improvement policy, and as experimental laboratories and test economies for the application of new policies and approaches (Farole and Akinci). Studies have been conducted in recent years to look into the cost-to-benefit ratio and economic and social impacts of policies enacted for the creation of special economic zones in these countries. In China, for example, the Third Plenum of the 11th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party adopted the Open Door Policy in 1978 and in 1980, four municipalities in two provinces were designated as special economic zones, opening China to global contact and influences. Almost immediately, the four special economic zones accounted for 59. 8% of the total Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in China. Since then, the SEZs continued to result in high rates of Cabatos 4 economic growth in China (Yeung, Lee and Kee).Analysis on the economic statistics of Chinese municipalities from 1978 to 2007 showed how special econ omic zones benefit the economy of China. Special economic zones increase per capita municipal foreign direct investment by 58% in foreign-invested and export-oriented industrial enterprises. Further analysis on the statistics also showed that the special economic zones increased municipal foreign owned capital stock while keeping the domestic capital and investment at a competitive level.Special economic zones also bring more advanced technology and increased total factor productivity by 0. 6% (Wang). Despite the economic benefits special economic zones have brought to China, several cases have turned up showing unsuccessful implementation of special economic zones in several countries. Quite a number of zones have become „white elephants? , zones that resulted in an industry taking advantage of tax breaks and incentives but are unable to generate substantial employment or export returns (Farole and Akinci).Similar to the SEZs, Industrial Development Zones (IDZs) have been est ablished in South Africa. However, unlike the impressive performance of special economic zones in other countries which transformed their economies into tiger economies, IDZs in South Africa have failed to sufficiently attract foreign investments or compete internationally (Altbeker, McKeown and Bernstein). In India, the designation of special economic zones has generated and constantly increased employment in regions where special economic zones are established. Figures may seem large, but when employment enerated by special economic zones in India is analyzed on a national level, special economic zones in India accounted for only less than one percent (1%) of the total manufacturing employment since their establishment in 1966 (Aggarwal). Cabatos 5 In the Philippines, special economic zones have already been established even before the Special Economic Zone Act of 1995 became a law. It was in 1923 that the Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines first conceptualized the creation of export processing zones or special economic zones.By 1967 the first export processing zone, the Bataan Export Processing Zone (BEPZ) was established by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 66 of then-President Ferdinand Marcos. Since then, several others have been established including two of the country? s major special economic zones – the Clark Special Economic Zone and the Subic Bay Freeport Zone (Mallari and Padilla). The Special Economic Zone Act of 1995 was the government? s response to the call of rural industrialization of the 1993-1998 Medium Term Philippine Development Plan.In pursuit for the aim of dispersing the industrialization scheme outside the National Capital Region, the government developed special economic zones through its Philippines 2000 program (Mallari and Padilla). With the SEZs? goal of promoting the flow of investments and generation of employment, studies have been conducted focusing on three of the major special economic zones in the country, the Bataan Export Processing Zone (BEPZ), the Clark Special Economic Zone (CSEZ) and the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, to look into the benefits and drawbacks of creating these special economic zones to Philippine economy and society.Looking into the working conditions of the Bataan Export Processing Zone, survey results have shown that majority of the labor force was composed of female workers, accounting for seventy-four percent (74%) of the total workforce, 67% of which are young or are 24 years old and below. Moreover, workers have been found to be well-educated relative to the job they have been hired for in the Bataan Export Processing Zone. Sixty percent (60%) had finished high school education and 16% pursued a post-secondary education (Mallari and Padilla). Cabatos 6 Significant difference in the wage of male and female workers was lso observed. Female workers were given a lower basic wage relative to that of male workers. Furthermore, one-third of the employees were paid below the minimum wage for the Bataan region. Despite the uneven and insufficient wages of workers, laborers sill work six days per week. A quarter of the labor force worked for 60 hours and 5% worked for more than 70 hours per week, where 46% worked overtime. The study reported that the working hours of workers per week in the Bataan Export Processing Zone were greater than the standard working hours of 8 hours per day and 48 hours per week (Mallari and Padilla). In conclusion, the Bataan Export Processing Zone was observed to have failed in creating sufficient opportunities of employment for the labor force in Mariveles, Bataan because of the limited capacity of enterprises to absorb the ever-increasing supply of labor in the area. The BEPZ, despite being momentarily able to generate adequate employment opportunities, has not catalyzed the growth of other economic activities in the region (Mallari and Padilla). The Clark Special Economic Zone (CSEZ) and the Subic Bay Freeport Zone were creat ed by virtue of Republic Act No. 227, otherwise known as the Bases Conversion and Development Act of 1992. The act aimed to convert Clark and Subic U. S. military bases, together with their extensions and substations, into productive civilian and economic use of lands through the establishment of special economic zones (â€Å"Republic Act No. 7227). Similar to the performance of the Bataan Export Processing Zone, the Clark Special Economic Zone, despite having been able to continuously expand employment opportunities in Pampanga and increased the value of exports, has not proven to have generated substantial employment. The thousands of job opportunities provided for the labor supply in Pampanga is not significant in proportion with total employment of Pampanga (Mallari and Padilla). Cabatos 7 A study on the decisive factors in establishing enterprises in Subic concludes that investors opt to create businesses in Subic because of competitively-priced raw materials and the abundance of skilled and literate labor force (Go and Tatad). Add the incentives given to these enterprises and you get a multi-million dollar business enterprise booming in profit while compromising the benefits and quality of their labor force. How special then is the Special Economic Zone Act of 1995 and its SEZs? We recall that the goal for the enactment of this law and the creation of special economic zones is to take the Philippine industrialization scheme outside of Metro Manila, promote rural industrialization and the spur of economic activity in less urbanized regions, generate employment and ease the regional income inequality and the poverty gap among social classes. However, there seems to be a mishap, not on the law but on the implementation of the law.In policy, special economic zones promote balanced growth by spreading the industrialization in rural regions and SEZs are indisputably effective in promoting foreign and local investments in areas where they are located. Although S EZs have been established outside the National Capital Region, it is evident that a large number of these SEZs, especially the largest and most dynamic ones have been established in areas proximate to NCR and still leaving behind Visayas and Mindanao in the economic progress of Luzon. There have been improvements in the national regional income inequality but are largely due to changes in inequality between top ranking regions in Luzon (Clarete and Veron). Just how special is it then? Cabatos 8 China and other Asian countries have done it. Why haven? t we? Is it because of the law? No. It is because of the poor system that we have, a system driven by money and stained by corruption. And unless we start the change to a cleaner, more efficient and a better system, „special? would only be in the name of Republic Act No. 7916, not on Philippine society. Parenting-week 4 Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Parenting-week 4 - Assignment Example While every child, with or without gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender (GLBT) traits, requires and deserves support, care, respect, an any other needed information for proper development, parents in the two videos ingested and accepted the fashionable â€Å"born gay† theory; a rather unfortunate and odd, but the correct deduction, that infants still dependent on their parents virtually for everything were labeled/associated with the traits mentioned. Sorry to say, but the ultimate sexual orientation of the children are/were designed in a way from their early ages. Notwithstanding the general androgynous behavioral patterns atypical of the phenotypic sexual orientation; the dress code, an interest in dolls, princesses, girlish make-ups in young boys, the outwardly boyish stance, a penchant for tools, a square-jawed readiness for physical tussles with boys, a distaste of the delicate perfumed trappings of femininity in young girls, it is rather stunning, absurd, and more so unconventional, that parents in ‘Always My Son’ trailer would associate their child with a weird, deviant trait like gaysm before even reaching the teen ages. Even though there are numerous studies on the same, there is no enough evidence to predict a child’s sexual orientation. With regards to ‘Families Are Forever,’ it is pretty hard to imagine how a family with a firm religious grounding, Christianity for that matter, would accept the behaviors of a son or a daughter attracted to the same gender, let alone going public, more so in a church that mostly goes in the opposite direction. Sexual orientation is but an internal psycho-emotional experience, and may or may not include a behavioral manifestation. While biological elements may well explain a person’s sexual orientation, albeit in part, it is an individual’s choice to either act upon the allures of the same gender or not; private decisions that people

Friendship (also loneliness and shyness) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Friendship (also loneliness and shyness) - Essay Example I have been able to assess the fact that a person comes across different friends in his life and that it is with time and maturity a person acquires mental compatibility with a friend. When I was in elementary school, I had friends in my class. The basic aim of friendship at that level of my life was basically to go to school and play with my friends during breaks. Friends were there to spend time with during lunch time and to discuss the different cartoons that we watched. We used to eat our lunch together and this was the level of enjoyment at that age. With time things change and the meaning of friendship changed in high school. I had a lot of friends but there was a group of very close friends. The meaning of friendship had matured and it was no more restricted to eating lunch together or playing games. It had rather acquired a broader perspective. Friends were there during difficult times. I could now discuss and share my problems with my friends and seek for their advice and as sistance in the matters where they could be of help. The same implied to them as they could also come and discuss the issues that they had. We had similar opinions and thoughts on a lot of matters but there were discussions and arguments on issues where we differed in our stands. This clearly implied the fact that we had a lot of similarities but we had our own opinions and thoughts and hence we did differ in our personalities from one another. Loneliness A good social circle and friends are very important for a person. If a person does not have a good social life, he tends to become lonely. The reduction in the number of friends is also associated with less people to interact with. At the same time, it also means that a person has less people of his age group to discuss his problems with. A lower level of social interaction can prove to lay a long lasting effect on a person’s personality. My cousin who is only 14 years old has problems in interacting with people. He does not have many friends and this can be counted as one of the reasons why he does not like going to school. This was not the case when he was in primary school. He was a bright kid and he loved to engage in play activities. His teachers would always praise him and they suggested that he should apply for moving a grade ahead owing to his increased capabilities than the children of his age. His annual reports always made his parents proud and they used to discuss his future options. Things changed when he entered high school as this school was in another state. His family had to move from the state where he completed his primary education. He became lonely in this new atmosphere. He did not have friends as all the children had their own circle of friends by then. He was lonely and he totally changed from what he actually was. My cousin could not cope up with this loneliness. He stopped interacting with his family as well and became a very quiet child. He was not as active as he used to be when he was a child. This was followed by the fact that his grades dropped in school. He had to get enrolled in summer classes but that did not help much. He did not like going to school. I have now analyzed the fact that the problem behind all his problems is basically his loneliness. The fact that he could not interact with children of his ag

A Tempest Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

A Tempest - Essay Example Caliban represents negritude. Decolonization is at the heart of A Tempest. Caliban struggles for freedom while Ariel collaborates for his freedom. The world of man usually thinks in hierarchical terms. This leads to constant power struggles and revolution when the time is ripe. The black devil-god, Eshu comes along to shake up the hierarchal structure set forth by the colonizer and to promote Caliban's revolution. A Tempest also reflects Cesaire's disillusionment with Communism and his desire for a colonial uprising. Cesaire uses the characters in A Tempest to represent the major ideals dominating the imperial world of the twentieth century. Prospero is the character that represents imperialism. Although Prospero did not voluntarily leave his native country for the purpose of colonizing another land, he fits the criteria of colonizer. Prospero believes that if it were not for him Ariel would still be held captive in a tree and Caliban would be nothing more than a beast. Prospero, the Empire, is: powerful, knowledgeable, strong, and magical. In Act I scene 2 of A Tempest, Ariel expresses regret at the fact that Prospero came and conquered. Ariel wishes that he could have stayed captive in the tree because after all he might have become a real tree in the end. Colonized people surely must have wondered to what heights they would have grown to on their own without the empire crushing down on them. Throughout A Tempest Prospero and Caliban are locked in a constant struggle. Prospero is angry that Ca liban will not accept his position of supposed superiority over him. It's obvious that Prospero has knowledge of magic since he captures, the sprite, Ariel, but one has to wonder if ninety percent of the magic Prospero has over Caliban is actually scientific knowledge that Prospero greedily holds on to and uses to keep Caliban in place. Prospero wants Caliban to believe that he has rescued Caliban from savagery. In a fine example of negritude Caliban proclaims who is mother is; where he came from, and the fact that he would be king of the island if it were not for Prospero. In the book titled Postwar: A History of Europe since 1945, author Tony Judt quotes Charles De Gaulle as saying, " 'In French Africa [] there can be no true progress unless men are able to benefit from it morally and materially on their native soil, unless they can raise themselves little by little to a level where they can partake in the management of their own affairs' " (283). The most remarkable person that Prospero has conquered is Ariel, because Ariel is hardly a person, Ariel is a sprite. Ariel represents the hope that colonized people felt. The hope that one day their freedom would be granted if they performed loyally to the empire and the hope that one day the empire would see them as their equals. The only way that an empire will let go of its hold over a people is to acknowledge the empire's wrong-doing in the first place. Through Ariel's non-violent struggle he believes that he can actually help Prospero gain a conscious. There is a struggle between Ariel and Prospero throughout the text, but it is much more subtle that Caliban's struggle against Prospero. Ariel and Caliban have an understanding that Prospero is the corrupt one. In Robin Kelley's introduction of A Tempest, Kelley paraphrases Cesaire's literary work titled Discourse on Colonialism, "The instruments of colonial power rely on barbaric, brutal

Role and Functions of Law Paper - Essay Example Secondly, the authority of the arms of government is enhanced thus encouraging personal freedom. Thirdly, laws help to attain the set standards and accomplish the expectations of a society. Fourth, laws enhance economic growth by ensuring a free and fair business competition. Laws promote social justice by offering ways and means of resolving conflicts. In the absence of the legislation and courts to govern the behavior of people, the result would be a chaotic society and therefore lead to a decline in business services rendered in a society (Bushman, 2007). The Federal court structure and the Michigan state court have similarities in the fact that the due process is the same whereby the court informs the defendant of his rights and allows them to access to a lawyer. In addition, the court proceedings, the sentencing, and the appealing process are similar where the defendant will listen to the sentence and have a chance to address the court. However, there are some differences in the sense that the federal courts have a limited jurisdiction while the Michigan state court has a general jurisdiction. Limited jurisdiction means that the court van only hear certain cases while in general jurisdiction a judge can listen to all cases ranging from violation of law to family disputes. Judicial review is a type of court proceeding whereby a judge reviews the decision or actions made by the government or by a public body to ascertain whether they are in line with the rules and regulations prescribed by the constitution (Joshua, 2014). The constitution acts as the supreme law of the land since it defines government functions and fundamental human rights. Therefore, the Supreme Court bears the mandate of reviewing all laws that conflict the constitution. In the absence of the judicial reviews of the decisions and actions of the government and public bodies, the

Albert Hourani and Ibn Khaldoun Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Albert Hourani and Ibn Khaldoun - Essay Example Hourani, in his book, presents his political views while he traces the emergence of Islam, which was born into a pagan area influenced by Christianity and Judaism, where the great powers exercised no direct control that is a breeding ground in both the political and religious. A new political order, headed by a new elite, following the Arab tribes of Mecca, went up between the two empires. The precise role that Mohammed has played in these events is uncertain because the history of his time was reconstituted in writing nearly a century after his death. These biographies tell of events concerning his life, his revelation and his action may not have been fabricated. Muhammad began to communicate his message, announcing the end of the world, the arrival of Reckoning, asking to submit to the Will of Allah, the Arabic word for the God of monotheism. His relations with other tribes deteriorated so quickly that he left Mecca for Medina in the Hijra, the Hijra, which marks the beginning of t he Muslim era. In Medina, Muhammad gathered an increased number of supporters and fought to Quraysh. For Ibn Khaldoun, morality matters in the relationship between the individual and the state to the extent that any resolutions or acts taken by the ruler should be evaluated by the moral principles of the society. As one of the great political thinkers and anthropologists, he was greatly affected by the Islamic traditions that values morality above one’s own interests.

American Constitution Law 4 paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

American Constitution Law 4 paper - Essay Example In his appeal the appellant argued that the state of Illinois was under a duty to provide him with a trial counsel at his expense as dictated by the Sixth and Fourteenth Amendments to the Constitution. The Illinois intermediate appellate court affirmed the conviction by the Circuit Court. The Supreme Court of the state of Illinois also rejected the appellant’s argument and stated that it wasn’t obligated to extend its decision in Argersinger v Hamlin (1972) to the case. Although the appellant was charged with an offense for which imprisonment was authorized upon conviction, the appellant had only been fined $50 instead of imprisonment. Judgment: the appellant further lodged his appeal in the Supreme Court of United States. In its judgment the court affirmed the Supreme Court of Illinois’ decision that the Constitution of the United States of America did not require the Circuit Court of Cook County to appoint a state counsel for the petitioner (Scott). Holding (Justice Rehnquist): No: The sixth and fourteenth Amendments only stipulate that no defendant can be sentenced to imprisonment unless he has been accorded the right to appointment of a counsel to defend him by the state. The appellant’s liberty was not at stake in this case because the state court had preferred the less severe sanction of imposing a fine to the severe one imprisonment so the appointment of a counsel was not necessary. Rule of law: The sixth and fourteenth Amendments only stipulate that no defendant can be sentenced to imprisonment unless he has been accorded the right to appointment of a counsel to defend him by the state. Concurring (Justice Powell): Held that it was important for the federal Supreme Court to provide a clear guidance to the many courts in all parts of the country that confronted the problem of legal representation

Flying cheap Movie Review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Flying cheap - Movie Review Example The ‘continental connection flight’ 3407was a commuter flight and is exactly the recreation of the documentary by Young and which depicts the errors with the pilot as well as the first officer to have caused the crash (Genzlinger, para 1-5). The documentary depicts evolutionary process in the regional system of airlines with the special focus on the relatively small airline companies such as the Colgan Company. The movie depicts the operations of the rather small airliners carrying the big names like ‘continental’ on them despite their failure to meet at least the minimum standards of operation in safety as well as training for the crew members. The plot features a former Colgan Pilot’s description of his daily routine at Colgan as a pilot. Many short routes coupled with lots of ‘landings’ and ‘take offs’ as well as meeting and braving bad weather are basic daily experiences to any pilot with the company. This according to him is so tiring and often presents a very long day to the pilot and crewmembers. As the documentary features, passengers often make a misinformed perception whenever in a plane for a flight while thinking that they are safe at the hands of the ‘well able and experienced pilot and crew members in control’ while the reality may prove otherwise. The story line adopted in the documentary is an investigative plot where it investigates how regional airline couriers especially those operating as low cost flights have steadily changed the entire air travel industry with increased awareness of competition and the need for incentives such as the cheap flights. However, the investigation line is on whether the adoption of such strategies and the need to realize higher profits is in any way related to compromises of safety standards as observed in airline operators. This is confirmed through the strategic feature of the continental connection flight, which crashed in 2009 outside Buffalo. The documentary records

Philosophy of education Essay Example for Free

Philosophy of education Essay Philosophy is a set of beliefs or ideas one has towards their discipline or line of work. Don Kauchak and Paul Eggen, authors of the textbook â€Å"Introduction to Teaching: Becoming a Professional,† define philosophy as â€Å"The study of theories of knowledge, truth, existence, and morality† [ (Kauchak Eggen, 2011) ]. The philosophy of education is a very important aspect of teaching. It is meant to guide teachers in the classroom and offer insight to the thinking of past experts [ (Kauchak Eggen, 2011) ]. It often will answer the main questions any new and even seasoned teachers have when preparing to teach in the classroom. There are various degrees of philosophy, for example; there is the philosophy of life, the philosophy of religion, and the philosophy of education. However, there are four philosophies of education they include: Perennialism, Essentialism, Progressivism, and Social Reconstructionism. After calculating my scores on the philosophical assessment in the Kauchak and Eggen textbook, I found that my personal philosophy of education is an equal combination of Perennialism and Social Reconstructionism. According to Kauchak and Eggen, Perennialism consists of the teaching of classic knowledge [ (Kauchak Eggen, 2011) ]. This includes literacy, mathematics, and science. Another way of looking at this is teaching student’s subjects that they will use in the future, even if it does not seem relevant now. The definition of perennial is â€Å"long-term† and that is exactly how a teacher with a Perennialism philosophy teaches. Social Reconstructionism, according to Kauchak and Eggen is â€Å"An educational philosophy suggesting that schools, teachers, and students should lead in alleviating social inequities in our society† [ (Kauchak Eggen, 2011) ]. In other words, a teacher with this philosophy teaches their students about social problems, improving society and teaching their students about personal responsibilities. Perennialism and Social Reconstructionism are each on opposite ends of the spectrum. Social Reconstructionism focuses more on the society in which the student lives, while Perennialism focuses more on the intellect of the student. Having these two as my personal philosophies is a bit difficult. While I do believe teaching tolerance and understanding is important, I also know that learning mathematics, science and literacy is equally important. After reading the scenario on page 219 of the Kauchak and Eggen textbook, I would respond to the students by first trying to motivate them. Offering incentives is a great way to get students’ attention; they are more eager to pay attention if they are pursuing it to get something out of it. You can use anything as a motivator; my favorite was always free dessert at lunch! You can also give extra credit points on the next quiz or for younger students you could offer an incentive such as â€Å"line leader† or â€Å"bathroom monitor† for the day. The younger students love when they think they are in charge of something, it can also help their self-esteem knowing they are doing something important. I do believe this is more of an example of Perennialism, however, depending on the specific motivator and the response it gets; it could be Social Reconstructionism as well. The second response I would try is starting a discussion. I would try getting the students’ attention by putting them in discussion groups or having a discussion as a whole class. This would definitely be an example of Social Reconstructionism. This encourages the students to work together and to come up with a solution together. It gives them a chance to ask each other questions before asking the teacher. It also compels them to stay focused on the topic and eliminates the â€Å"my hand wasn’t raised† excuse. My third response, though I would make it my last resort, would be to write a summary on what was taught during the instruction. By doing this, it makes the students want and need to listen in order to do their assignment correctly. This also offers a chance to get some feedback from the teacher and allows you to reflect on what you learned and what you need to work on. This is an example of Perennialism, as it deals with the thought process and encouraging literacy. While Perennialism and Social Reconstructionism are complete opposites, they also share some characteristics, making it easier to teach using both philosophies. Many common knowledge subjects can be transitioned to include activities that work well to alleviate social problems. In math, you can have the students work in groups. This promotes team work and logic. In literacy, you may give reading assignments dealing with a specific problem in society (e. g. poverty, bullying, etc) and have the students write summaries on what they read. This can promote logical thinking as well as establishing knowledge of the society issue in the reading.

One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest Essay Example for Free

One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest Essay In One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey tells the story of Randle McMurphy, a rebellious, boisterous and overtly sexual man who utilizes his extroverted qualities to win over his fellow patients in the mental institution. McMurphy’s confident nature and non-conforming attitude brings hope to everyone living in the ward. Ultimately, he sparks dissent and inspires them to go against the oppressive head nurse, Nurse Ratchet. McMurphy’s confidence does not waver until he realizes that Nurse Ratchet will always have the upper hand over the patients. Nevertheless, this does not stop him from concocting plans to provoke and get rid of her. McMurphy receives many harsh punishments for his actions and eventually loses the battle against the head nurse. Not only does he lose against Nurse Ratchet, but he eventually loses himself through the process. Additionally, in the film The Experiment, the protagonist Travis, undergoes an adversity which is comparable to what McMurphy faces in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The development of both characters can parallel each other through the similarities of their actions. Kesey first introduces McMurphy to readers when he is brought to the mental institution. At first glance, McMurphy can be viewed as a con man. He committed the crime of statutory rape but instead of accepting a jail sentence he convinces the judge that he is not straight in the head and is thus sent to a mental institution. Most patients at the ward are unresponsive, yet when he first arrives at the institution, he introduces himself to everyone. The patients and nurses are taken aback by McMurphy’s feisty attitude. Unlike the other patients, McMurphy is loud, arrogant, and capable and it is evident to everyone that he does not belong in a place like that. After the wards group meeting, McMurphy sees firsthand how Nurse Ratchet abuses her power as head nurse. He makes a bet with all the patients in the ward that he can make lose her temper. The patients warn him and insist that Nurse Ratchet not one to be messed with but he still acts otherwise. In this instance, McMurphy’s rebellious nature shines through. It is made clear to readers that he will not allow Nurse Ratchet to win over the patients for long. He wants to give her a hard time and hopefully get rid of her. Nurse Ratchet sees McMurphy’s deviance and knows that she must break him, just like she broke all the other patients so she can continue her oppressive leadership over the ward. After numerous confrontations between McMurphy and Nurse Ratchet, the patients in the ward find the incidents quite amusing. Eventually, McMurphy is able to rile up all the patients and encourage them to watch the World Series on the television. Although it was not their allotted time to watch the television, they all participate in the rebellion. Through McMurphy actions, the patients see that they should not view Nurse Ratchet as an oppressive and domineering force. They begin to feel hope inside themselves and begin to envision that living in the ward will not be as miserable as it once was. Nurse Ratchet’s patience begins to wear thin and once McMurphy physically attacks her, she quickly makes the decision to have him lobotomized and leaves him neurologically disabled. After this event, the patients can no longer live in the ward. McMurphy was a friend to all and they could not stand living under Nurse Ratchet’s rule. She loses all control and the patients transfer to other wards or check out of the institution completely. McMurphy’s eventual destruction and death was not out of vain as he was able to transform the patients into believing that each person was an individual and should be able to freely express themselves. He left them with a belief that would aid them for the rest of their lives. Randle McMurphy’s feisty and strong-willed character can easily parallel many dominant male characters in films. For example, in the 2010 film The Experiment, Paul T. Scheuring directs the story of 26 men who are selected to take part in a 14 day experiment where some participants act as guards and others as inmates. The guards have only one rule to follow they must make sure the inmates obey the basic rules of living in a prison. Eventually the power wielded by the guards gets to their heads. They abuse their roles and exploit and humiliate the inmates. They become great oppressors and being to forget that the inmates are only human. Violence begins to ensue. The protagonist, Travis, is selected to be an inmate in the prison. From the beginning, it is made apparent that Travis is not buying into the whole prisoner concept. Just like McMurphy, Travis acts out as an individual. He is not one to follow others and ceases any opportunity to give the guards a difficult time. He then begins to act out in defiant ways. He mobilizes the inmates and leads rebellions against the guards. He and many other inmates firmly decide that they will not be silenced into submission. Eventually, the experiment goes wildly out of control and is stopped by researchers. Like Randle McMurphy, Travis fights back against the oppressors. He did not like seeing his fellow inmates get taken advantage of. Travis begins rebelling and disobeying the rules in small ways, such as refusing to eat his meals. Eventually, he uses physical force to end the tyranny in the prison. Randle McMurphy and Travis are similar characters in many ways. They both were able to unite the group of men that were facing the same adversity. They did not like seeing any of their own getting harmed. Furthermore, just like McMurphy, Travis acts in defiant ways to get into the guards heads. And finally, both use physical force to hurt their oppressors at the very end. To sum it up, they are the spark that brings hope to the oppressed and lead the rebellions against the oppressors.

Mercutio In Romeo And Juliet

Mercutio In Romeo And Juliet In the play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare has created several memorable characters, aside from the witty, humorous, and theatrical character of all time Mercutio. Mercutio is neither Capulet nor Montague, but is portrayed as a very close friend to Romeo. Yet Mercutio and Romeo both very dissimilar views on love and on life in general. This is clearly conveyed through Mercutios witty wordplay and language within the play. Primarily the prologue in Romeo and Juliet plays an important role in giving information on were the play is set and what it is about. Shakespeare begins with the most renowned line in literature two households emphasize the theme family, Montagues and Capulets both alike in dignity yet involves another theme power. The prologue also introduces fatalism to the audience as the word star-cross`d lovers suggests stars determining destiny and the words cross`d lovers foreshadow the death of the lovers. The juxtaposition of antithetical ideas in the prologue creates the effect of anticipation and suspense , Shakespeare uses antithesis such as Death ,love and life to summarise the key themes and to foretell and intensify that a tragedy will take place. Mercutio can represent a number of comparisons and contrasts to other characters by means of his quick wit and optimistic attitude. In Act 1 Scene1 the themes hate and conflict are extremely expressed through the characters Benvolio and Tybalt. The character Tybalt is seen as very vulgar and aggressive since he chooses to emphasise on the words hate and hell, he then goes onto say I hate, all Montagues suggests he is only interested in fighting the Montagues and everything he seems to say is negative and full of frustration and disgust. In addition Benvolio, one of Mercutios close friends is seen as the peace maker, unlike Tybalt he is determined to stop the fighting and keep the peace . While Benvolio is calm, sensible and reliable, Mercutio tends to be sarcastic that follows his emotions, but is still remembered as this distinctive dramatic character. Whats more, Prince Escalus the voice of authority appears onto scene and demands for the fight to stop. Shakespeare uses antithesis in the Princes speech you men, you beasts to show his reaction, furthermore the prince can be seen as a character with such emotion as he begins to use violent imagery and says quench the fire of your evil hate and throw your Mistemper`d weapons suggests he is a mediator, like Benvolio and would like to see the feuds in Verona to stop. The juxtaposition of antithetical ideas in the quote Disturb our streets again he proclaims your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace foreshadows the death of Mercutio and Tybalt. Later on in the Scene, the themes friendship, loyalty and love are expressed through Romeos unrequited love for Rosaline. When describing her physical beauty to Benvolio, Romeos descriptions are dreamy yet depressing. Shakespeare displays courtly love through the character Romeo and his infatuation for Rosaline when he begins to pine in despair out of her favour and then uses oxymorons O brawling love! O loving hate! to create a dramatic effect by swiftly switching two major themes together love and hatred , also creates confusion and gives an impression that he is self absorbed and immature. Throughout the scene Benvolio calls Romeo coz and this shows their extremely strong relationship also Benvolio is seen as a loyal and considerate friend when he continuously questions tell me in sadness ,the word sadness highlights the strong bond and respect between the two friends. On the other hand, Shakespeare presents the character of Romeo as over exaggerated and melancholy when Romeo use s hyperbolic language to convey his obsession with Rosaline he compares himself to a sick man in sadness, suggests his conceited mentality. In addition another very close yet different friend to Romeo is a character called Mercutio. Shakespeare chooses to include this humorous and spontaneous character after the audience has seen Romeo and his lovesickness, to create a dramatic effect by showing their opposing views on love. Mercutio, Benvolio and Romeo all sneak into the house of Capulets hoping that Romeo will enliven as Mercutio tells Romeo he must dance shows their close and friendly friendship. Romeo can be seen as depressing when he using a metaphor on the word soul while talking about Mercutios nimble soles referring to his own soul being stuck to the ground. Then Romeo expresses his confusion by saying is love a tender thing he goes onto create bestial imagery by describing love as rude , boisterous and pricks like a thorn gives us his mix yet positive views on love . Nevertheless Mercutios attitude towards love, contrast as he advises Romeo to retaliate back to love by prick love for pricking and beat love down shows he has a negative overview on love. The words prick and beat also show how frustrated he is and that he doesnt want his infatuation to ruin their friendship, we begin to see a diverse side that conveys he is kind and caring. Mercutio begins to mock Romeo with witty wordplay and sceptics when Romeo talks about having had a dream; Mercutio delivers a nonsensical speech on Queen Mab being the fairies midwife who rides a chariot made of an empty hazelnut suggests that all desires and fantasies are corruptive and futile .Shakespeare juxtaposes certain words together with antithetical ideas ,giving a reflection on Mercutio by the use of vivid images of opposing lawyers and lovers , soldiers and fairies also refers to some opposing themes in the play such as love and hatred. Moreover the misogynistic view in the speech about Queen Mab riding over soldiers neck and violent vivid imagery of cutting foreign throats foreshadows death and fighting by giving a negative vision that the whole concept of dreamers and being in love is dangerous as well as substantial. Through the Queen Mab speech Mercutio degrades women, yet captivates the audience in talking nonsense creates humour. In Act 2 scene1, the theme of true love is conveyed when Romeo has seen beloved Juliet he climbs onto the Capulets wall, whilst Mercutio and Benvolio call out for Romeo, Mercutio mocks Romeos infatuation for Rosaline shouting Madman , lover and refers to Venus the roman goddess of love. Then Mercutio uses the theme of petrachan love to describe Rosalines high forehead and scarlet lip to tease Romeo. Shakespeare uses dramatic irony as we as readers know its not Rosaline, Romeo loves. However Benvolio has a lot of concern for Romeo as he says if he will hear it will anger him; Mercutio on the other hand thinks it cannot anger him signifies Mercutio is a better friend as he tells the truth to benefit Romeo. Shakespeare uses satirical irony when expressing the theme of loyalty between Mercutio and Romeo. He describes Rosaline as a pale Hard-hearted wench and then uses imagery to describe Romeo as dead and stabbed , but due to love not hatred creates another dramatic effect of the role of Mercutio. Mercutios interaction with Romeo grows strong as he clearly states Romeo isnt strong enough to encounter Tybalt at a duel he then begins to mock Tybalts fashionable fighting by calling him the prince of cats tells us he is brave to protect Romeo. Mercutio also uses rhetorical language when insulting Romeo on groaning for love? conveys his cynical belief on love. Shakepeare has also displayed the character of Mercutio as both outrageous and fascinating when he mocks the nurses weight, comparing it to a sail! and calls her ancient tells us Shakespeare has done this to create wittiness and also to drive the entire play forward. Plus Mercutio and Romeos rapid interchange, indicates Romeo is quick to understand Mercutios witty wordplay. Furthermore the character Benvolio is displayed as blood and patient, when he tries to stop Mercutio to scape a brawl Mercutio begins to aggravate Benvolio in saying he will quarrel with a man for cracking nuts suggests Benvolio isnt quick to comprehend Mercutios clever wordplay. Mercutio also likes creating a scene when Benvolio tells Tybalt and Mercutio to reason coldly of their grievances , Mercutio seems to not care in saying let them gaze ,his own arrogance is leading to the tragedy of his death. When Tybalt insists in fighting with Romeo , Shakespeare uses dramatic irony in portraying the character of Romeo to be an innocent , love puppy who talks about loving the Capulets name as his own foreshadows the relationship of Romeo and Juliet. Ultimately the scene changes from bawdy comedy to dramatic tragedy when the role of the comic foil in the play comes to an end. Mercutio uses a metaphor and visual imagery when provoking Tybalt in comparing him to a good king of cats who has Nine lives represents his loyalty towards Romeo. Shakespeare dramatises Mercutios death as it hides his feelings over humour creating theatrical tension, Mercutio uses powerful language in cursing the two feuding families a plague on both of your houses he then goes onto using repetition whilst being sarcastic Ay , ay ,a scratch signifies his strong and brave personality all to protect Romeos Honour. By killing of the character of Mercutio, the character of Romeo changes from a romantic archetypal petrachan lover to a villian who kills Tybalt.
